Do you recommend Diamox or other drugs?

We do not recommend Diamox (acetazolamide) or any other drug. You only have to bring with you the medications under the medical prescription for your consumption.

Our acclimatisation process is designed to be enough for everybody. If not, the doctors will check and suggest a medicine depending on each case. At first, Diamox helps to acclimatise; on the other hand, climbers must drink a lot of water to compensate for the dehydration, much more than usually should be drunk, which is already a lot in Aconcagua. Climbers often do not manage to drink too much water and become dehydrated, and that causes freezing, edema, etc. It is also very heavy to carry a lot of water during the day, and it is difficult to urinate very frequently when wearing mountain equipment.

Diamox is a diuretic, but you need to drink a lot of water at height altitude, which you do not drink ever in the necessary amount. It is not recommended to add a diuretic. And it hides the symptoms of edema, among other things.

Another problem that Diamox brings is that in many circumstances, depending on the type of sediments the water has, Diamox causes the water to feel bad, and that causes climbers not to drink all the water needed.

You may buy it at the pharmacy in Mendoza only under a medical prescription; it is up to you; it is not available to purchase independently.
